Careers to Start When You are 30

When you decide to quit your job and start a new career at 30, the idea is that you shouldn't be afraid.

You should have done enough in your 20s to not give a damn about anything but your own interest.

You shouldn't be scared to start something new because you should have been able to do everything you "needed to do" in your 20s.

At 30, you should just care about what you want to do.

I quit my lucrative 9-5 a little over a  year ago because... I just didn't want to work for anybody anymore. Ten years in advertising was enough for me. I couldn't take it anymore.

At 34, I was forced to explore a new a career, one that I like and wouldn't mind doing for the rest of my life. There were different considerations:

  1. I had to like it. The main reason I quit advertising is the fact that I was sick of it. I was good at it but I didn't like it. If I am to pursue another job, I have to do something that I really like.
  2. It has to give me time to do things that I like doing. I like running and I want to enjoy that too. I like watching movies, reading books and spending time with my niece. I want to be able to do all those.
  3. I had to earn enough to pay my bills.
Below are some options that I have learned about.

Digital Real Estate

Build websites and make money from them through advertising or by selling products or contents. You may also sell them when your site has enough traffic on your site.

This is the career I am pursuing now. Well, one of the two. I currently have four websites, three of which are blogs. That includes this one.

Ways to Make Money:
  • Ads – Adsense and others
  • Amazon Affiliate
  • Selling contents or products
  • Selling titles – someone buys your title and turn it to a book, show, movie or a product line
Either way, you need traffic on your site and that will not come easy. Unless you have the money to promote and advertise your site, expect to start earning significantly after one year. You might start getting clicks on your ads in a month but the significant earning will start after a year.

You also need to put some quality content on your site and you have to do it regularly. You will be able to push traffic to your site through search or people posting links to your content. Both will happen only when your content is worthy of being shared.

Remember that a blog isn’t the only way to go. You can actually develop sites with a different concept. Here  is an article that suggests different website ideas

Personal English Tutor

There are a lot of people coming from non-english speaking countries who are looking for a personal tutor to teach them the language. In Asia, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and others actually flood the Philippines just to be tutored. This is because it is cheaper for them to go to the Philippines and get a tutor than enroll in a university that teaches English.

Sign Language Interpreter

Nobody really grows saying they want to become sign language interpreters. That’s why there’s not a lot of them around. However, do remember that more and more people are becoming aware of the need to accommodate the needs of people with special requirements. That means companies, schools, government agencies and other private organizations are hiring more sign language interpreters.

Unless you are working for a company that really caters to the hearing impaired, you are not likely to get employed full time but you will have a lot of “part time work”.

Writer

Now you can finally write that book. If you fail to find a publisher, you can self-publish and you have the entire world as your audience. You don’t have to be bound by the distribution capacity of your publishing company. Open an account on amazon and sell your book. There are a lot of writers who make a living solely on publishing their own book through Amazon.

Non-Profit Organization

You can now start volunteering to causes you feel passionate bout. You can volunteer to Habitat for Humanity, World Vision and even United Nation. It won’t pay much. It will most likely pay you just enough to feed you but you can choose organizations that will give you opportunities to travel or do things you are interested in.
